From time to time I like to look back at older lessons, and remove some of the cobwebs — and here’s a fun one from a few years back I want to showcase today...
LESSON #372
|
This lesson teaches a fairly approachable fingerstyle sequence that does not use Travis picking – so there's no alternating thumb to worry about. Chord-wise we're just using G C D – but there's plenty of spice via unique chord voicings + melodic fingerstyle flair to keep things interesting.
This is inspired from the opening song on the collaboration album The Marfa Tapes by Miranda Lambert, Jack Ingram, and Jon Randall (listen to their song here). Really fun to play!
My main video lesson (above) is unchanged, but I have updated the PDF – cleaning up some of the potentially confusing tabs, and rewriting things using my latest standards. I’ve also added some zoomed playthrough videos (capo 5 and no capo), as well as a separate video explaining the right-hand fingerpicking technique I’m using.
Find all these over on my lesson webpage »
This week I also added three brand new play-along jam tracks to my website. These are hand-rolled by me in GarageBand, each one giving you a 5-6 minute loop that repeats the main chord progression with a steady drum beat + guitar to play along with.
These tracks are for the following songs, and can be viewed on the pages linked below.
Looking for more jam tracks? Here's a list of all my lessons that have a video practice track you can play over. Each one can be found on the corresponding lesson page — just be sure to scroll down a bit below the main video.

As a bonus for reading this far, here's a secret video I made showing off each of the tracks — along with some casual Q&A where I answer questions about each of these songs from the past few weeks.
Disclaimer, this is a one-take video (no edits) and is full of mini-mistakes I'd normally re-record — but I wanted to get it out in a timely manner... I hope it's helpful!
Here's an amazingly well done video I came across on YouTube yesterday – the topic is practice and repetition, and specifically the importance of using the correct technique when aiming to improve.
The instrument being discussed here is piano, but so many of these concepts apply 100% to guitar playing as well. Wanted to share!
That's it for today – everyone have a great weekend!
David
