Learning Guitar Later in Life – Is It Possible?

After more than a decade of making weekly guitar lessons, I'm finally getting around to a true "Guitar Fundamentals" course — which is something so many of you have asked for over the last few years.

Today, I'm happy to share 11 new videos from this course which are ready to view on my on members-only course page... and in today's newsletter I want to give you a sneak peek of one of them.

The video below answers a fairly common question I receive, about starting guitar late in life:

As I state in the video, I had the benefit of starting guitar in my early 20s — so can't speak with personal authority to the experience of picking it up later in life.

However — I do receive a lot of emails and messages from Song Notes members who have started in their 50s, 60s, or 70s... and let me know how incredibly happy they are to have finally started, found my lessons, and make steady progress.

Watch the video above to hear more of my thoughts on this topic.

10 Other New Videos Also Available!

Here's the other video lessons I've made for the first part of this course – can you view them all here. This first batch is meant to give you all the must-know info & advice to hit the ground running.

More lessons are on the way in the coming weeks!

I plan on chipping away at this course in between my typical song lessons until it's fully baked. But again, in the meantime you can watch everything above over on my Song Notes website.

A Quick Plug for My Other Courses

Especially if you're newer to guitar, you may enjoy these courses I've made in the past couple years:

I also have pages dedicated to lessons on these specific topics, which may be helpful. The one thing these pages are lacking, to be honest, is beginner-friendly "start here" roadmap. I plan on fixing that before the end of 2025, but nonetheless I have a ton of great lessons you might enjoy:

Finally, I have a page of beginner-friendly song tutorials you may want to check out. These are grouped by key, which allows you to take one family of chords (e.g. G C D Em for the Key of G) and apply them to all, or most, of the songs in that group.

Have Beginner Guitar Questions?

If there's any specific topics or hurdles or problems you're having as a beginner-ish guitarist, let me know!

As I build out this course, I want to be sure I'm tackling all the common pain-points that folks are running into.

Simply reply to this email and let me know.

I'll catch you all in the next one – until then!
